One of the very first things you should install after getting a new PC is Spywareblaster. As of this writing the latest version is 3.5.1 and it can be downloaded here...

Once downloaded and installed you should immediately update it.

What's so good about this program? It's free and it works with minimal effort. It acts as a forcefield around your computer, preventing the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted software. All you have to do is update it at least once a week and your computer won't be bogged down ever again.

Occasionally there is a major update that will require redownloading the main .exe which will require you to revisit the website above and download the latest version.
